More on module # 3
In chapter 7 I also learned that middle school students can learn adjectives by watching cartoon charters to build vocabulary skills. More advanced learners could work with smaller children and record their vocabulary in a natural setting for ten minutes to draw conclusion about the wide range of word usage in the child's speech. Journal writing is one the strategies that I use in my class. As class begins children get their journals out ,as I take role, and lunch count this helps students be quiet as well as lets them know what is expected of them as they enter class. From the article Building Academic Vocabulary it suggest Words and Terms that " school districts should systematically ensure that all students were to be exposed to specific academic terms and phrases across the grade levels, this would form a strong common foundation for all students" ( p. 2).

Academic Vocabulary is required in most school districts but the procedure on how to teach academic vocabulary is not suggested. We know that writing the word and definition does not work. We know that the words have to be introduced in real world, real action, and with a real purpose and then frequent revisiting of the word by teacher and students should be there. Thus, it is the teacher who has to discover a means for students to use the words frequently and get rewarded for the word use.
ReplyDeleteI first of all suggest putting the words into their academic area groups and, of course, putting them up on the word wall. Then the teacher stresses they should be used in conversation and writing where appropriate.
Academic Vocabulary is also augmented with the academic vocabulary from the textbooks. Many words are required to be learned and yet we know brain research tells us only 5-7 items can be processed at one time. Thus, how can be learn our vocabulary?
